Bernard Mornah, a former General Secretary of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) has described the controversial E-levy as an Economic Thievery Levy and Electronic Thievery Levy.

According to Mr. Mornah who was speaking during a One on One interview on Metro TV Monday, February 28, 2022, monitored by Apexnewgh.com, “Going to Parliament to sleep with a mat is more necessary than to get into the jungle and probably returned with bombs fighting the system but getting to parliament with our mats to demonstrate and dramatized that if the Members of Parliament went ahead to pass the E-Levy, is more or less exposing Ghanaians to sleep in the bay. So, we needed to demonstrate that for our representative to know”.

“You don’t want us to sleep outside, because sleeping outside is not good and you are bringing in what I term as economic Thievery Levy or electronic Thievery Levy and Thievery have not ceased to be a crime, it remains a crime, it doesn’t matter where is coming from. So, if the government of Ghana decides to engage in thievery through e-levy, it’s abominable. In fact, the court should be one to say, the government of Ghana by this action you are going to steal from people’s wallets, so we don’t want you, people, to do so.

“The government of Ghana wants to steal from people’s pockets and we cannot just allow it to go because is out there with all its machinery spreading false information, while they know, they were engaged in a Masterful act to steal from the people.

When Mr. Mornah was asked what he meant by government spreading false information, Mr. Mornah said “…in fact, they are engaged in blackmail”.

“The government of Ghana comes to say that, without the thievery levy, they will stop the free SHS from the ministry of Education. Then you wake up the Ministry of Agric said, subsidies and input for fertilizers will cease and Minister for Road said contractors should not expect to be paid. Then, the Minister for Finance with another blackmail by saying if workers in the public sector do not accept E-levy, they will not receive their salaries”.

“So, the government is engaged in direct blackmail.
And you are not doing this to ignorant people, you are doing this to very intelligent and learned persons who understand that you are coming to steal from us. And worst of all is that the government put out false information that they are going to take the E-levy to create an entrepreneurial environment and Ghana is going to be an entrepreneurial nation”
