Benjamin Nsiah, a discerning Energy Analyst, recently scrutinized the Akuffo Addo/Bawumia administration’s stint in the Energy and Petroleum Sector over the past four years, delivering a disheartening rating of a mere 20%. Apexnewsgh reports
In their 2020 manifesto, the NPP had fervently outlined their intentions for the energy realm, focusing on fostering efficiency, ensuring value-for-money across all activities, guaranteeing reliable and affordable power generation and distribution, and enhancing the oil and gas sector’s development.
Alas, the reality fell short of the promised paradise. Despite laying out ambitious plans, the government struggled to live up to its commitments. Notably, Ghana’s electricity tariffs persist among the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa, making power an expensive commodity for the general populace.
Mr. Nsiah lamented, highlighting the failure to align with more economically priced electricity benchmarks set by countries like South Africa and China.
Acknowledging a glimmer of progress, Mr. Nsiah commended the government’s strides in revenue collection enhancement, albeit citing substantial room for growth. However, the issue of inadequate revenue recovery from debtors, especially the government itself, remained glaring, with ECG failing to muster even half the funds owed to them for power supplied.
Looking ahead to the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto launch on August 18, 2024, Mr. Nsiah proffered some sagacious recommendations. He advocated for a strategic restructuring of ECG, proposing its division into regional or zonal subgroups to boost operational efficiency significantly. Additionally, he urged the inclusion of a comprehensive plan in the manifesto to bolster the affordability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), aiming to curtail the widespread use of charcoal in Ghanaian households and promote sustainable energy practices.
As the nation anticipates the unveiling of the NPP’s upcoming policy agenda, stakeholders keenly watch if these critical suggestions will shape a more impactful trajectory in the energy domain.
