The Country Representative for Agriterra Ghana, Habiba Nyarko Agyamang, has emphasized the importance of farmers working together to achieve growth and success at the 2024 Ghana Federation of Forest and Farm Producers (GhaFFaP) national dialogue in Bolgatanga. Apexnewsgh reports
She stressed that individual farmers cannot thrive alone, but by pooling resources and sharing a vision for agriculture as a business, they can overcome challenges.
To achieve this unity, Madam Agyamang identified key steps. First, farmers must identify common needs, such as accessing finance, improving farming techniques, or collective selling of produce.
By recognizing these shared interests, farmers can come together and leverage their collective strength. For instance, individual farmers may struggle to afford a tractor, but collectively, they can hire one to plow their land.
However, Madam Agyamang warned that incentives from governments, NGOs, or projects can create unsustainable partnerships. Instead, she advocated for organic growth, capacity building, and robust governance systems. This includes establishing clear decision-making processes, human resource development, and strong financial systems.
She highlighted Agriterra’s success in Ghana, particularly through the FFF program, which has supported farm organizations since 2018. The program’s impact is evident in the growth and diversification of cooperatives, which have expanded beyond their core businesses.
The Country Director believes that by embracing these principles, farmers can unlock their full potential and create thriving agricultural businesses. As Madam Agyamang concluded, “We have come a long way… I’m very happy to have been part of this.”
The theme for the 2024 dialogue “Small holder producer organizations access to finance market linkages and social protection key to delivering sustainable climate resilience and green recovery”
