Speaking during his vetting session before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 13, 2025, Dr. Forson assured the public that his administration would take necessary measures to remedy the issues created by the debt restructuring programme.
The DDEP, introduced to address Ghana’s mounting debt crisis, has had significant effects on the country’s financial sector and citizens. The programme restructured domestic bonds and debts, resulting in losses for creditors and a complex repayment schedule that has raised concerns about Ghana’s fiscal sustainability.
Dr. Forson expressed his commitment to resolving these issues and ensuring Ghana remains on a path toward financial recovery and economic stability. He outlined the payments Ghana faces as part of the debt restructuring process, including repaying GH¢12.6 billion in 2025, GH¢15.7 billion in 2016, and GH¢53 billion in 2027.
Dr. Forson emphasized that his administration would take decisive action to address the challenges posed by the DDEP. “We will do whatever it takes to clear the harms that have been created as a result of the domestic debt restructuring,” he stated. With his commitment to resolving the issues surrounding the DDEP, Dr. Forson aims to promote economic stability and growth in Ghana.
