Former Attorney General Godfred Dame Files Writ to Halt Chief Justice Removal Process

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame has filed a writ at the Supreme Court, seeking to halt the ongoing process to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from office. Apexnewsgh reports

The legal action, taken by Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Vincent Ekow Assafuah, challenges the legitimacy of the process initiated by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Assafuah, the writ prays the court to declare the consultation processes triggered by the President as null and void, citing violations of constitutional provisions. This development raises concerns about Executive interference in the Judiciary and is expected to test the limits of presidential authority in judicial matters.

The controversy began when President Mahama presented three petitions for the removal of the Chief Justice to the Council of State for consultations. Assafuah’s legal team, led by Godfred Dame, argues that the procedure followed in attempting to remove the Chief Justice is unconstitutional.

As the case unfolds, legal and political stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, eager to see how the Supreme Court will rule on this critical matter. The outcome will have significant implications for the balance of power between the Executive and Judiciary in Ghana.
