Former Communications Minister Ekow Spio-Garbrah has stated his readiness and eagerness to be former President John Mahama’s running mate in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

During an interview with Accra-based TV3, the former Trade Minister confidently stated, “I am also capable; I am also ready. So, it is a matter of his [Mahama’s] choice”.

Recognizing his previous position as Mr. Mahama’s boss at the Communications Ministry, Spio-Garbrah added, “If he chooses me, we will all hear about it”. Despite once again expressing his interest in leading Ghana’s party and the country, Spio-Garbrah emphasized that he currently resides in Ghana, making himself available for the potential role.

In November of last year, Mr. Mahama responded to suggestions that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should consider Eric Opoku, an MP from Asunafo South, as his running mate in the 2024 elections. While acknowledging the importance of the role, Mahama highlighted the established procedures within the party for selecting the most suitable candidate.

Mahama assured the public that the selection process would commence this year and urged patience while awaiting the decision from the Presidential candidate, National executives, and Council of Elders. During a recent visit to the Ahafo region, Mahama informed traditional leaders and their people that, “Just like custom has it, our party also has processes to select candidates for various roles. It is the presidential candidate, national executives, and council of elders who come together to select a running mate. But that process will start next year, so, keep praying for such a time”.

In the previous general election held in 2020, Mr. Mahama chose his former Education Minister Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.
