The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) has commended the Government of Ghana for what it terms a historic and progressive decision: the inclusion of 60 private Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year.
In a press release dated July 20 and signed by its National Executive Director, Oberto Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, GNACOPS expressed profound gratitude to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for acknowledging the vital role that private schools play within the national education ecosystem.
“This progressive move marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s educational transformation journey,” the statement declared. “It underscores the Government’s commitment to inclusive, collaborative education delivery and reaffirms the important role of private schools in advancing national development goals.”
The 60 private SHSs, selected from various regions across the country, are now authorized to enroll students under the Free SHS initiative for the forthcoming academic year. GNACOPS emphasized that these institutions are expected to maintain high standards of transparency, accountability, and academic excellence.
Addressing the broader private education sector, GNACOPS acknowledged concerns from schools that were not included in this initiative. The council reassured them that efforts are in progress to expand the program in future phases. “We encourage continued patience, preparation, and compliance with regulatory standards,” the release urged.
Moreover, GNACOPS called upon the newly approved private schools to act as “ambassadors of excellence,” showcasing that the private sector is a capable and credible partner in delivering free, equitable, and quality education to all Ghanaian children.
In conclusion, the statement reaffirmed GNACOPS’s commitment to influencing education policy, enhancing stakeholder engagement, and ensuring that private education remains a vital component of Ghana’s national development agenda.
As this new chapter begins, the council remains dedicated to supporting a collaborative environment that fosters educational growth and success across the nation.
