In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, a Ghanaian couple, Valerie Owusu and Emmanuel Addae, has been convicted of second-degree murder in the tragic death of five-year-old King Owusu.
The young boy was brutally beaten and left for dead in a home in Brentwood, New York, leading to an extensive legal process that culminated in a conviction on 22 March.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office released a statement expressing the horrific nature of the crime, with District Attorney Raymond Tierney remarking on the severe and extensive injuries King suffered at the hands of his own mother and her partner over a three-day period. The child’s condition worsened, eventually resulting in his untimely death due to the injuries inflicted upon him.
Prosecutors detailed that the couple used multiple instruments to inflict the fatal beatings on King, who was left without medical assistance or emergency intervention. On 1 April, 2021, the boy was abandoned at a family member’s residence, where he was discovered deceased upon their return. Investigations revealed that King had sustained injuries all over his body, indicating the severity of the abuse he endured.
Owusu and Addae now face potentially life imprisonment as they await sentencing on 1 May for their roles in the heartbreaking death of young King Owusu. The case serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of society and ensuring justice for those who suffer at the hands of abusers.
