Ghana’s Coastline Under Threat: Urgent Protection Needed to Save Critical National Assets

Apexnewsgh

A stark warning has been issued by the Ghana Hydrological Authority (GHA), stating that two-thirds of the country’s coastline is at risk of erosion, putting critical national assets in jeopardy. Apexnewsgh reports

Dr. John Kissi, CEO of the authority, revealed that a staggering 370 km of Ghana’s 550 km coastline is vulnerable and requires immediate attention.

Key assets at risk include the Aboadze Power Enclave, St. Augustine SHS, Denu-Alao Highway, and Cape Coast Nursing and Midwifery Training College, among others. Dr. Kissi emphasized the urgent need for protection, stating, “Within that 290-kilometre stretch, there are various important national assets at risk that need urgent action to protect them.”

The Aboadze Power Enclave, which generates 730 megawatts of power, is a significant concern, as are strategic roads like the Accra-Takoradi road in Cape Coast and educational institutions such as St. Augustine SHS, UCC, and the Cape Coast Nursing and Midwifery Training College.

Dr. Kissi stressed the need for substantial investment from both the government and private sector in coastal and climate adaptation and management strategies to mitigate the threat. He also urged the public to refrain from engaging in sand-winning activities that exacerbate coastal erosion.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts with ongoing projects, Dr. Kissi called for more investment, particularly in areas where strategic assets are at risk. He invited the private sector to partner with the authority, invest in coastal protection, and contribute to the national hydrological fund.
