The 13th African Games being hosted in Ghana has been marred by allegations of official neglect and mismanagement, according to Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Reports have surfaced of athletes having to buy their own kits, arriving at the games in rickety pick-up trucks, and overall poor treatment.
Ablakwa expressed his dismay at these claims, describing them as heartbreaking. He questioned why the athletes are receiving such treatment when the Ministry of Youth and Sports has reportedly received over GHS215 million from the Ministry of Finance for expenditures related to the games. He also highlighted outstanding payments to single-sourced contractors amounting to nearly GHS197 million.
Despite Ghana’s economic crisis, Ablakwa pointed out that taxpayers are contributing over GHS412 million for the very things athletes are complaining about. He raised the question of where all the money is going, suggesting potential mismanagement of funds.
With nearly 3000 athletes from across the continent participating in the Games, which are taking place in Accra and Cape Coast, the event is set to run until March 23, 2024.
The allegations of neglect and mismanagement have raised concerns about Ghana’s hosting of the prestigious African Games.
