The ceremony unfolded against a backdrop of poignant remembrance as a giant statue and memorial were unveiled in honor of Sankara and his fellow activists, who tragically lost their lives on October 15, 1987. During the moving event, officials and citizens of Burkina Faso hailed Sankara and his comrades as “fallen but forever alive in their hearts.” They expressed their aspirations that the newly established Thomas Sankara Memorial would serve as a site for reflection and inspire continued resistance against oppression, colonial legacies, and terrorism.
Significantly, the government of Burkina Faso took the opportunity to honor Ghana’s late former President Jerry John Rawlings. In a heartfelt gesture of Pan-African unity, authorities announced plans to name a ceremonial street in Ouagadougou after Rawlings later in the week, recognizing his impactful leadership and unwavering support for the Burkinabè people.
Dr. Omane Boamah conveyed the deep appreciation of President Mahama and the Ghanaian populace for the warm welcome extended to the delegation. “I am deeply grateful to the government of Burkina Faso and my counterpart, Minister for Defence Brigadier General Celestin Simpore, for the exceptional hospitality and the opportunity to engage in productive dialogue,” he remarked.
He further acknowledged the contributions of several esteemed Ghanaian officials who played vital roles in fostering this relationship, including Minister for the Interior and National Security, Muntaka Mubarak; Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu; Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (Rtd); Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Intelligence, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings; as well as former National Security figures under President Rawlings, Naval Captain Asaase Gyima (Rtd) and Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi.
This visit not only celebrates the historical ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso but also underscores Ghana’s steadfast commitment to regional peace, historical justice, and the ideals of Pan-African unity.
