Ghana’s highly polarized politics has been laid bare following chaotic scenes during the vetting of ministerial nominees. Apexnewsgh reports

Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development, attributed the chaos to the country’s binary politics. “The parliamentary chaos is an outgrowth of our highly polarised binary politics,” he said on the Agenda show on TV3.

The chaos unfolded on January 30 during proceedings of the Appointments Committee, resulting in the suspension of four MPs: Frank Annor Dompreh, Rockson Dafeamekpor, Hassan Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaibu. The MPs were seen pushing and shoving each other, pulling and dragging tables, and destroying microphones.

The disagreement stemmed from a dispute between Minority and Majority members over the vetting schedule. While Minority members felt they couldn’t continue after 10:00 pm, Majority members insisted the exercise could proceed without them.

However, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin lifted the suspension after an appeal by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Marin, supported by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga. Bagbin noted that the affected MPs had shown remorse, saying, “As a father, when your son commits an offence, you don’t punish your son to the extent of breaking his leg.”
