A recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) projects that Ghana’s population will surge by 70.36% between 2021 and 2050, reaching an estimated 52.47 million. Apexnewsgh reports
The report, “Population Projections 2021 – 2050,” utilizes data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census and historical sources to predict a steady rise in population over the next decade.
Shifting Demographics and Urbanization
The report highlights a transformation in Ghana’s population structure, with a decline in the proportion of children (aged 0-14) and a significant rise in the population aged 60 and over. The trend towards urbanization is expected to continue, with the urban population projected to reach 60.7% by 2030. Greater Accra, the most urbanized region, will experience a population density increase of 1.3 times by 2030.
Gender and Education
The report reveals a slight female majority, which is expected to decrease slightly by 2050. The male-to-female ratio is projected to reach 96 per 100 by 2050. The number of school-going children (aged 4-24) is expected to rise steadily, reaching an estimated 15.85 million by 2030. Greater Accra and Ashanti Region will have the highest school-age populations by 2030.
Working Age and Elderly Population
The working-age population (aged 15-59) is projected to increase, reaching over 22 million by 2030. The elderly population (aged 60 and over) is also expected to rise, with six regions expected to see an increase of over 50% by 2030.
Implications for Policymakers
Deputy Government Statistician, Dr. Faustina Frempong-Ainguah, emphasizes the need for policymakers and institutions to plan for the projected population growth, particularly in terms of the pressure it will place on facilities in Accra in the coming years. The report provides valuable insights for policymakers and institutions to prepare for the future.
