The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has announced that the government is advocating for stiffer punishment for individuals who attack journalists in the line of duty. Apexnewsgh reports

This move comes in response to a disturbing trend of violence against media professionals, with 45 cases of assault and attacks documented by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) over the past five years.

The year 2023 has seen a surge in attacks, with four cases reported in October alone. This alarming situation highlights the urgent need for intervention to protect media freedom in Ghana.

During a working visit to Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd on Wednesday, May 21, Abubakar revealed that the Information Ministry has engaged with the judicial service to address the issue. She emphasized that the ministry is adding its voice to the advocacy for harsher punishment for those who attack journalists.

Contrary to popular assumption, research by organizations like CDD and the Media Foundation of West Africa shows that attacks on journalists often come from security agencies and other non-political entities. Abubakar stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to address this issue and ensure the safety of journalists.

The government’s push for stiffer punishment is a crucial step towards protecting media freedom and promoting a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their critical role in society.
