Tamale South lawmaker, Haruna Iddrisu, has strongly criticized a letter from Secretary to President Nana Bediatuo Asante to Parliament regarding the anti-gay bill, calling it a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
The lawmaker expressed concern that the letter reflects President Akufo-Addo’s desire for dominance over other state organs, which he deemed unacceptable.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was unanimously passed by Parliament on February 28. The bill proposes imprisonment for individuals promoting or funding LGBTQ+ activities, as well as for those openly identifying as LGBTQ+.
After the bill’s passage, President Akufo-Addo indicated his decision to wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling on a lawsuit challenging the bill before assenting to it. Subsequently, the Attorney-General advised Parliament to halt the transmission of the bill to the President until the lawsuit’s conclusion.
In response to these developments, Haruna Iddrisu highlighted the critical role of Parliament in lawmaking and emphasized the need to protect the separation of powers as outlined in the Constitution. He called on all stakeholders to resist any attempts to undermine the democratic process and uphold the principles of the 1992 Constitution.
The lawmaker stressed the significance of addressing the issues raised by the President’s letter and urged Parliament to ignore the directive until the Supreme Court’s verdict on the bill. This move is seen as a crucial step in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy and ensuring the accountability of all state institutions.
