High Court Grants Bail to Bissue and Owusu Amid Corruption Charges

The High Court in Accra has granted bail to Charles Bissue and Andy Owusu, setting the bail amount at GHc 200,000 each.

The court required each accused to provide two sureties, one of whom must be justified, amidst serious allegations of corruption-related offences.

The two individuals face 15 counts, including abuse of office for profit, a charge that has raised eyebrows across the nation. During the court proceedings, both Bissue and Owusu pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the judge to impose several conditions as a part of their bail agreement. Among these conditions, they must deposit their passports with the court registry and report to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) once a month.

This case will return to court on May 29 for further proceedings, as the legal battle unfolds. The charges against Bissue and Owusu were filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, focusing on the duo’s alleged corrupt involvement in illegal mining operations.

Charles Bissue, who previously served as Secretary to the now-defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), is accused of using his public office for personal gain. Court documents reveal that on or around January 22, 2019, he allegedly received GHC 15,000 from a businessman named Benjamin Adjapong, facilitated by Andy Owusu. This transaction is just one of several allegations that underline the serious nature of their charges.

As the legal proceedings continue to develop, the public remains keenly interested in the outcome, hoping for transparency and accountability in this high-profile case.
