John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has come out swinging against the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), calling it a recipe for widespread hardship among Ghanaians. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking in Kasoa, Awutu Senya East Constituency, as part of his Central Region campaign tour, Mahama highlighted the devastating impact of the DDEP, which he claims has been handled with shocking indifference by the government.
Mahama pointed to the recent passing of Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo, CEO of Kama Group and a vocal critic of the DDEP, as a stark illustration of the programme’s dire consequences.
He noted that government bonds, once considered the safest investments globally, have become a financial albatross under the NPP’s watch. Citizens who trusted government-backed securities now face unprecedented financial strain.
Mahama also took aim at President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to unveil a statue of himself, questioning the timing and priorities of such a move amidst the country’s economic crisis. “Achievements should speak for themselves,” Mahama argued, emphasizing that Ghanaians are struggling to make ends meet while the government prioritizes self-promotion.
The NDC presidential candidate’s words echo his earlier promises to reset Ghana’s economy, create jobs, and champion social justice and equality.
Mahama’s campaign has focused on addressing the economic challenges facing Ghanaians, and his criticism of the DDEP is just the latest salvo in his push for change.
