President Mahama Seeks Council of State’s Counsel on Chief Justice Removal Petitions

President John D. Mahama has taken the first step in addressing three petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. Apexnewsgh reports

The President has forwarded the petitions to the Council of State, initiating the consultation process outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

This development was announced in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

The Council of State will now examine the petitions and advise the President on the next steps. This process is crucial in ensuring that the constitutional provisions governing the removal of a Chief Justice are followed.

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Chief Justice Torkornoo has faced calls for her removal. In January, former President Akufo-Addo dismissed a petition seeking her removal, citing a lack of merit.

As the consultation process unfolds, the country waits with bated breath to see what the outcome will be. Will the Council of State recommend the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo, or will the petitions be dismissed? Only time will tell.
