In a landmark decision, the Judiciary has announced that the High Court will permit live media coverage of the proceedings related to the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, also known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024. Apexnewsgh reports
This move follows a strong recommendation from Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, who emphasized the significant public interest in the case.
In a letter to the Chief Justice, Dame urged for full media access to the relevant courts to cover all proceedings related to the bill, citing the importance of transparency in the administration of justice. He noted that four cases related to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill have been filed across various levels of the court system, with two to be heard at the High Court and two at the Supreme Court.
One of the High Court cases is scheduled for hearing today in the General Jurisdiction 8 courtroom, and the Judiciary’s decision will allow for live media coverage of the proceedings. This move is seen as a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in the judicial process.
The Chief Justice’s initial allowance for media houses to livestream the hearing of Richard Sky’s injunction application on the same bill has now been extended to include full media coverage of all proceedings related to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
This decision is expected to provide the public with greater access to the legal process and enhance the understanding of the issues at stake.
