A devastating fire swept through Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, leaving hundreds of traders displaced and reducing nearly the entire market to ashes. Apexnewsgh reports

The blaze, which erupted late last night, caught many off guard, with traders scrambling to salvage their goods as the flames rapidly spread.

Eyewitnesses described the sudden outbreak of the fire, with one resident recounting, “We were asleep when we heard someone shouting. When we woke up, we saw that there was a fire outbreak.” The Ghana National Fire Service responded swiftly, deploying 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to combat the blaze.

Fire Service spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey described the situation as “very serious,” noting that while firefighters initially managed to douse the fire, their efforts were hampered by the lack of a fire hydrant and depleted water supply, leading to the fire reigniting. Despite the severity of the fire, Nartey reported no severe casualties so far.

The scale of destruction, however, was immense, with traders and local residents joining firefighters in battling the inferno. The Fire Service estimates that extinguishing the fire could take approximately two days, given its intensity and the conditions on the ground.

As the people of Accra come to terms with the devastation, the road to recovery and rebuilding Kantamanto Market has only just begun.
