Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer.
Although it is not prostate cancer, the cancer was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.
The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed, but the King has already commenced “regular treatments” on Monday.
Despite the diagnosis, Buckingham Palace stated that the King remains optimistic about his treatment and eagerly anticipates returning to his full public duties as soon as possible. In light of his condition, he will temporarily postpone his public engagements, with other senior royals expected to stand in for him during his treatment.
No additional details regarding the stage of cancer or prognosis have been provided by the palace. The King, aged 75, returned to London from Sandringham in Norfolk on Monday morning and will undergo outpatient treatment for his cancer. However, he will continue fulfilling his constitutional role as head of state, including paperwork and private meetings.
Just over a week ago, the King underwent a prostate procedure at a private hospital in London. His decision to publicly share his prostate treatment aimed at encouraging more men to undergo prostate checks. The palace stated that the King was delighted to have raised awareness on the issue, as the NHS website reported a surge in inquiries about prostate conditions.
A significant statistic from the UK reveals that, on average, more than a third (36%) of new cancer cases each year occur in individuals aged 75 and over. This highlights the increased likelihood of developing cancer with age.
