The former Minister for Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for donating 200 motorbikes to the Police Service. Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Dr. Donkor expressed his discontent with ECG’s decision, citing their significant indebtedness as the main reason why they have no authority to make such donations.
Dr. Donkor highlighted the fact that ECG is heavily in debt, amounting to billions of Cedis. He mentioned a recent intervention by the Minister for Finance to prevent Sunon-Asogli from shutting down due to ECG’s indebtedness to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). According to Dr. Donkor, an entity that cannot pay its debts has no business donating motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service.
He criticized ECG’s management for their irresponsibility, stating that it is unacceptable for them to make such donations when they are unable to fulfill their financial obligations. He emphasized the intervention made by the Minister of Finance to avoid load shedding in the country, specifically mentioning the role of Sunon-Asogli’s 560 megawatts in preventing power shortages.
Dr. Donkor further urged the management of state entities, particularly those in the commercial sector, to take responsibility for their financial health. He mentioned that if the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority had made the donation, he would have no objections, as they are a profitable entity. However, he reemphasized the irresponsibility of a loss-making entity like ECG jeopardizing the future and security of the country by donating 200 motorbikes.
