Lawyer for Kwabena Adu Boahene Reveals Leaked Memo Intent Amid Ongoing Legal Battles

Samuel Atta Akyea, the lawyer representing Kwabena Adu Boahene, spoke out regarding a leaked memo from the former Director of the Signals Bureau.

The memo, which detailed various expenditures during Boahene’s tenure, was intended as a warning to the current National Security Coordinator, cautioning that the handling of his case could lead to significant legal complications.

Atta Akyea emphasized that his client is prepared to disclose sensitive national security issues in his pursuit of freedom, stating that Boahene feels he has been left with no other option. The day had already taken a dramatic turn; earlier that morning, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) had rearrested Boahene on fresh charges.

During the court proceedings, Atta Akyea expressed his frustration with the EOCO’s actions, explaining that despite a previous court ruling granting Boahene freedom, the agency had executed his arrest at midnight based on these new allegations. “At the last sitting, the judge ordered that he should have his freedom yesterday. They [EOCO] then informed us they had another matter under investigation concerning him,” he said, relaying the unusual timeline of Boahene’s detention.

According to hints Atta Akyea has received, the new charges appear to revolve around secured internet services and the procurement of equipment for Ghana Water Company. He reassured the court that while Boahene is not afraid to defend himself, he feels cornered as the investigation delves into national security matters.

In a notable development, the High Court reinstated the bail terms for Boahene after his week-long detention. Originally granted bail on May 2, 2025, for GH₵80 million, a reduction from an earlier amount of GH₵120 million, Boahene stands trial alongside his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, for allegedly embezzling GH₵49.1 million from the state.

The couple, along with a third co-defendant, Mildred Donkor, and their company, Advantage Solutions Limited, are facing a litany of charges—including conspiracy to commit crime, stealing, using public office for profit, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

As attorneys work to prepare for the next steps, the case is scheduled to resume on May 26, 2025, when the prosecution is expected to file witness statements and disclosures to share with the defense team. The unfolding events not only illustrate the complexities of the case but also raise questions about transparency and accountability in public office.
