President John Dramani Mahama has strongly responded to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s remarks on the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
Dr. Bawumia had questioned the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) claim to credit for the cedi’s performance, attributing the currency’s stability to legacy initiatives such as the NPP’s gold purchase program.
In a pointed rebuttal, President Mahama emphasized that the cedi’s recent gains cannot be attributed to a single policy initiative. Instead, he highlighted the broader impact of leadership and governance, stating that “effective leadership” is the key driver of macroeconomic stability and currency strength. According to Mahama, a combination of good governance, fiscal discipline, and restored public confidence has contributed to the cedi’s appreciation.
The president pledged that the gains made under his leadership would be sustained beyond his current term. He expressed his commitment to setting a high standard in government, ensuring that future administrations cannot reverse the progress made in restoring public confidence in the country’s democracy and economy. “With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and create a better life for our people,” Mahama said.
