Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to reduce the cost of Hajj for Ghanaian pilgrims if he wins the 2024 presidential election. Apexnewsgh reports

Currently, the cost of Hajj, including airfare and accommodation, stands at GH¢75,000, which Mahama considers expensive and a barrier to many Muslims fulfilling their pilgrimage to Mecca.

Speaking during Eid ul-Adha prayers with the Ahlussuna Wal-Jamah Muslim group at the State House in Accra, Mahama expressed his commitment to making the Hajj pilgrimage more accessible and affordable for all Ghanaian Muslims. He donated GH¢20,000 and a sheep to the group.

In a Facebook post, Mahama highlighted that during his presidency, Hajj fares were significantly lower at GH¢11,900, and he intends to reduce the cost once again if elected. He emphasized the importance of making the Hajj pilgrimage accessible to all, especially for those who cannot afford the current high cost.

Mahama’s promise has been met with enthusiasm from the Muslim community, who see it as a welcome gesture towards making the Hajj pilgrimage more inclusive and affordable for all.
