Mahama Urges Labour Unions to Show Restraint in Wage Demands

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to labour unions to be moderate in their wage demands for 2025, promising that his administration will ensure higher remuneration for workers once the economy stabilizes. Apexnewsgh reports

This assurance came during a National Tripartite Committee meeting at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, where negotiations resulted in a 10% increase in base pay for 2025.

This increment marks the second wage adjustment in less than a year, following a 23% hike in 2024. Mahama emphasized the need for patience and collective effort in rebuilding the economy, stating, “Let’s tamper our demands for this year, and once we get out of the woods, we’ll set good targets to bring inflation down so that the cost of everything will come down”.

The President also proposed the establishment of an independent emoluments committee to determine salaries for all workers, including the President. This move aims to ensure fair wages and transparency in the compensation process. Mahama assured labour unions that his administration is committed to walking this journey with them, and once the economy improves, he will support higher wage increments, even up to 35%.

The labour unions have acknowledged the President’s assurances but emphasized the need for concrete economic policies to improve workers’ living standards.

As Ghana navigates its economic recovery, the coming months will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of Mahama’s administration in balancing economic growth with worker welfare.
