Speaking on Morning Starr monitored by Apexnewsgh.com Monday, the political science lecturer stated that despite the fact that the current government has taken some steps to fighting corruption, former President Mahama’s administration did better.
“When you look at Transparency International figures, if you look at what we have done from 2013 the scores. The scores say that the closer you are to zero is the highly corrupt your country is and the closer you are to hundred the highly clean your records are.
“The figures for 2013-46 percent, 2014-48, 2015-47, 2016-43 it tells you about Mahama’s era that the highest performance was 48 and the lowest which was closest to zero that was in 2016 recorded 43 percent,” Dr. Asante stated.
According to Dr. Asah Asante, a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Ghana – Legon, former President John Mahama is believed to have performed better in fighting corruption compared to President Akufo-Addo. This assessment comes after the recent arrest of Democracy Hub, a group participating in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
To carry out the arrest, the Police obtained court approval, following their application, to take action against the organizers of Democracy Hub. The group had planned to stage a demonstration near the Jubilee House, starting from Thursday, September 21 until Saturday, September 23, 2023.
He continued, “The rating for the government of Nana Akufo-Addo from 2017 is 40%, 2019-41%, 2020-43%, 2021-43%, 2022-43%. This shows that the highest level of performance under Nana Akufo-Addo’s government is 43%, which occurred from 2020 to 2022, and the lowest is 40%.
“What this indicates is that Nana Akufo-Addo’s lowest performance in addressing corruption is equal to Mahama’s highest. This suggests that corruption is widespread in the country.”
Dr. Asante further stated that given the economic difficulties in the country, the actions of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters cannot be criticized.
