The Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing public safety in the potential spillage of the Akosombo Dam. Apexnewsgh reports
At a meeting with Volta River Authority (VRA) officials and security and emergency services officials, Quartey stressed the need for proper stakeholder engagement, sensitization, and public safety measures.
The meeting was part of VRA’s sensitization efforts to inform stakeholders and the public of the measures being taken to mitigate the impact of the spillage on affected communities. The VRA team, led by Ing. Kenneth M. Arthur, presented a detailed roadmap for the spillage, highlighting interventions and precautions to ensure community safety.
Quartey urged VRA to engage with Members of Parliament from affected areas to ensure a coordinated approach to managing the impact. VRA has identified hotspot communities likely to be affected and has begun sensitizing them to avoid fear and panic. The authority has also taken precautionary steps, including stakeholder engagement and regular updates with the public.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana National Fire Service, and Ambulance Service. The Minister and stakeholders commended VRA’s proactive approach, and the authority assured the public of its commitment to sharing regular updates on the situation.
