Ministry to Review Ghana’s Broadcasting Framework Amid Digital Convergence

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation has announced plans to review Ghana’s broadcasting policy framework to reflect the realities of digital convergence, where radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting are increasingly merging into a unified ecosystem.

The announcement was made on Friday, September 26, by Samuel Nartey George at a high-level media forum hosted by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra.

Minister George revealed that the ministry will work closely with the Ministry of Government Communications and other key stakeholders to conduct a thorough and objective review of the current broadcasting bill. The aim is to ensure that the legal framework keeps pace with the complexities and nuances of the modern digital media environment.

“The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation is reviewing Ghana’s broadcasting policy framework to reflect the realities of digital convergence, where radio, television, and internet-based broadcasting increasingly overlap within a single ecosystem,” Minister George told participants.

The forum, organised in partnership with Channel One TV and Citi FM, brought together regulators, policymakers, industry leaders, and technology experts to discuss how Ghana can modernise broadcasting policies and foster innovation in the face of rapid technological change.

Under the theme “Aligning Policy, Technology and Global Best Practices for a Resilient Media Landscape,” discussions focused on the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G, evolving consumer behaviors, and the regulatory challenges reshaping the creation, delivery, and monetisation of media content.
