Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged Dr. Johnson Asiama, the newly nominated Governor of the Bank of Ghana, to stop assuming office until his appointment is approved by the Council of State. Apexnewsgh reports
Afenyo-Markin’s call comes after Dr. Asiama formally took office on Monday, February 3, and held his maiden meeting with senior executives of the central bank.
In a letter to President John Dramani Mahama, Afenyo-Markin expressed concerns about Dr. Asiama’s assumption of office without the necessary approval. He argued that this raises serious procedural and constitutional concerns, particularly since the Council of State has not yet been constituted.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Dr. Asiama can seek necessary briefings outside of formal office assumption while awaiting confirmation. He stressed the importance of upholding institutional processes and avoiding precedents that could undermine the integrity of the appointment process.
In response, Minister for Government Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu pointed out that a similar procedure was used in 2017 to appoint the Common Fund Administrator under President Akufo-Addo, questioning Afenyo-Markin’s stance on the matter.
