Minority MPs Stage Walkout, March to EOCO HQ to Demand Release of NPP Chairman

In a dramatic display of solidarity, the Minority in Parliament staged a walkout from the House on Thursday and marched to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. Apexnewsgh reports

Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs converged at EOCO’s headquarters, demanding the release of Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party Chairman.

The MPs expressed deep concern over Mr. Boasiako’s continued detention, despite reportedly meeting bail conditions. Chanting slogans and holding placards, the group called on EOCO to clarify the circumstances surrounding Wontumi’s detention and ensure his rights are respected.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the issue was not just about Wontumi, but about upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all Ghanaians, regardless of their political affiliation.

The Minority has vowed to continue pressing for transparency and justice in the matter, urging civil society and legal advocacy groups to join in ensuring due process is followed. The demonstration drew the attention of EOCO officials, but the agency had issued no formal statement as of the time of the march.

Mr. Boasiako, a prominent figure within the NPP, is reportedly under investigation, although details of the case remain unclear. His prolonged stay in EOCO custody has sparked political tensions and drawn criticism from supporters and members of the opposition in Parliament.

The Minority’s actions underscore their commitment to ensuring that the rights of all individuals are protected and that the rule of law is upheld.
