The Nabdam Traditional Council, under the leadership of Naa-Pariyoung Kosom Asaga Yelzoya II, has reaffirmed its strong stance against child marriage and gender-based violence in the Nabdam area.
Addressing a recent council meeting, the Paramount Chief highlighted that although the national rate of child marriage has dropped to 19%, the prevalence in northern Ghana remains alarmingly high at about 34%, a situation he described as unacceptable.
Naa-Pariyoung stressed that child marriage is neither a cultural norm nor part of tradition, and firmly violates Ghana’s Children’s Act. He issued a stern warning that those found perpetrating such acts would face strict sanctions. The Council, he said, is committed to strengthening local by-laws and has called on residents to report all cases of abuse to either the Palace or the Police for immediate action.
“What is good for the girl child is good for the nation,” the Paramount Chief declared, reinforcing the Council’s dedication to championing the rights and well-being of girls. He concluded with a rallying call: “When we protect our daughters, we secure our future. Let us unite in purpose and action to end child marriage and gender violence once and for all.”
