In a revealing interview on Metro TV’s “Good Morning Ghana,” Nana Akomea, the Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia 2024 Campaign team, shared insights about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) expectations leading up to the recent elections. Apexnewsgh reports

Akomea disclosed that the party had been monitoring the electoral landscape closely and had predicted the election outcome months before the polls opened.

Internal research conducted by the NPP in February 2024 indicated a troubling trend: the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, was leading by a significant ten percentage points. Akomea expressed his concerns regarding the polling fluctuations during that critical period, noting, “In February and March, the NDC was leading by about 10 percentage points, which was quite concerning.”

However, as summer transitioned into fall, the NPP sensed a shift. By September and October, the gap had narrowed to just 2 percentage points, providing a glimmer of hope. “It was a new momentum, so we knew that there was going to be a lot of apathy, a lot of disgruntlement among our supporters,” Akomea commented.

Despite the shrinking margin and a newfound sense of optimism, the final election results served as a grim reminder of the NPP’s earlier forecasts. The Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, officially announced the results on December 9, 2024, confirming Mahama’s victory with a total of 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the ballot. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia trailed behind with 4,657,304 votes, amounting to 41.61%.

The stark difference in voter turnout has raised significant questions within the NPP. Mr. Akomea emphasized the need for an investigation into the voter participation rates, stating, “Anything else would just be a projection and so on. So we knew that the monthly poll showed us clearly [Mahama’s victory], and for a massive 2 million people to stay away, it’s really massive and we have to find out why.”

As the NPP contemplates its next steps, the party is determined to better understand the electorate’s sentiments and identify factors that played a role in their electoral defeat. With the future of the party hanging in the balance, the insights from this election will undoubtedly shape their strategies moving forward.
