NDC Demands Accountability for Misused Flood Mitigation Funds

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra region has called for a full investigation into the alleged misuse of funds allocated for the Greater Accra Resilience Integrated Development Project (GARID). Apexnewsgh reports

The project, aimed at mitigating perennial flooding in Accra, was funded by a USD200 million World Bank loan approved in 2019 and an additional USD150 million approved this month.

Despite the significant funding, Accra is currently experiencing severe flooding, resulting in loss of life and property. The NDC has raised concerns about the diversion of funds initially allocated to the GARID project, with only USD8 million of the USD200 million utilized, and minimal preliminary work done on project sites.

The NDC has questioned why the GARID funds were diverted to the COVID Fund, despite international financial support for pandemic relief. The party has also highlighted unfulfilled promises made by President Akufo-Addo to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

The NDC is demanding a full investigation by Parliament into the allocation and application of the GARID funds, prioritizing the safety and security of the people of Greater Accra.
