Interior Minister Urges Security Agencies to Take Tough Stance on Illegal Mining

The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, has directed security agencies to vigorously clamp down on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, without any fear or favour.

Speaking at the 17th Regional Commanders’ Conference held in Accra on Friday, the Minister emphasized the need for a no-nonsense approach to tackling this pervasive issue.

Mr. Muntaka urged the security services to arrest anyone who obstructs anti-galamsey operations, regardless of their political affiliations or perceived authority. “I will not send you into the forest only to call back and ask you to exempt someone. That will never come from me,” he asserted, making it clear that he would not shield individuals involved in illegal mining activities.

Particularly, he charged the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, along with officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), to act decisively against any attempts to interfere with the ongoing enforcement efforts against galamsey.

“If anybody calls you to say I have asked that you should let go of this operation, please ensure that you arrest that person,” the Minister firmly stated, underscoring his commitment to a crackdown on illegal mining.

Mr. Muntaka’s strong directive sends a clear message about the government’s determination to fight illegal mining and its associated impacts on the environment and communities. As the security agencies prepare to implement this mandate, the renewed focus on enforcing the law is expected to resonate throughout the regions most affected by illegal mining activities.
