Multiple award-winning journalist Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of ApexnewsGh has been recognized as the 2024 Best Online/Wire Reporter at the Inclusive and Anti-Conflict Journalism Awards. Apexnewsgh reports
The award ceremony, held on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in Accra, honored Stephen for his exceptional reporting on issues affecting marginalized groups in the North.
Ngamegbulam’s reports, including his thought-provoking piece titled “The Horrors of Witchcraft Accusation,” earned him the prestigious award.
His latest documentary on witchcraft accusations in the northern region, particularly in the Upper East Region of Ghana, is a testament to his exceptional journalism skills.
This comprehensive documentary features a diverse range of stakeholders, including chiefs, clergymen, fetish priestesses, fetish priests, soothsayers, legal experts, accused victims of witchcraft, and families of lynched accused victims.
Previously, Mr. Ngamegbulam’s outstanding work has earned him prestigious recognition, including the GJA Upper East Regional Human Rights Reporter award in 2019 and the Regional Climate Change Reporter award in 2023.
These honors are a fitting tribute to his unwavering passion for storytelling and his unrelenting pursuit of truth.
The Media Platform on Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Minority Rights Group International, organized the ceremony as part of the 2-year project on Engaging Media and Minorities to Act for Peace building (EMMAP) in Ghana, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.
Ngamegbulam’s work was selected from among 41 submissions received by the judging panel for the Media Platform of Environment and Climate Change.
The Executive Director of MPEC Ghana, Mary Ama Kudom-Agyemang, emphasized the need for more journalists to report critically on stories about minorities in society.
“We need more journalists and media organizations to show interest in stories pertaining to conflicts, the environment, climate change, and migration,” she said.
Former President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail Monney, charged the winners and other journalists to relentlessly fight for environmental causes and hold those in power accountable.
“No government responds to silence. You need to incessantly report on stories that can hold those at the helm of affairs responsible,” he said.
The General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Mr. Kofi Yeboah and Francis Ameyibor the Executive Director of M-CODe were all present at the award ceremony.
Other journalists awarded at the ceremony under the print and online/Wire and TV categories include Anthony Adongo Apubeo, Mohammed Fugu, Timothy Ngnenbe, Emmanuel Bright Quaicoe and Mona Lisa Frimpong
This recognition highlights the importance of inclusive and anti-conflict journalism in promoting peace and understanding in society.
