Dominic Nitiwul, Ghana’s former Minister of Defense, has opened up about the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s efforts to address the long-standing conflict in Bawku during their tenure. Apexnewsgh reports

While acknowledging significant strides in maintaining stability, Nitiwul expressed regret that lasting peace eluded them.

In a candid interview, Nitiwul emphasized that the government took concrete steps to address the conflict, including deploying security forces, fostering dialogue among stakeholders, and collaborating with traditional and community leaders. Although these efforts brought temporary stability, they fell short of achieving a long-term resolution.

Nitiwul underscored the importance of peace in Bawku, highlighting its prominence on the NPP government’s agenda. He noted that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s acknowledgement of the issue during his final State of the Nation Address demonstrated the gravity with which the government viewed the situation.

The conflict in Bawku, primarily involving the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, is deeply rooted in historical and chieftaincy disputes. With numerous casualties, including 41 deaths in the latest clashes, Nitiwul’s remarks stress the urgent need for sustained efforts to foster trust and achieve lasting peace in the region.

As Nitiwul aptly put it, “The government should engender trust in the people. That’s the first thing the government needs to do.” This sentiment echoes the need for a multifaceted approach to address the complex issues underlying the conflict, ensuring that peace and stability are finally achieved in Bawku.
