The future of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections is looking uncertain as cracks within the party begin to surface. Apexnewsgh report
The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has warned that if these issues are not addressed urgently, the party will face a tough time in the upcoming elections.
“If the cracks are not managed very fast it might have consequences because they don’t have much time on their hands”
The recent resignation of Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has added to the turmoil within the party. It has been reported that Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) Alexander Afenyo-Markin will take over as the leader of the majority bench. This move comes after a meeting between Afenyo-Markin and President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House to resolve conflicts with the executive over changes to the party’s front bench in Parliament.
Dr. Draman emphasized the importance of managing these internal conflicts quickly, as time is running out for the party before the elections. He expressed concerns about the possible consequences if the cracks are not addressed promptly. With divisions within the party becoming more pronounced, Dr. Draman urged for unity and cautioned against creating further divisions within the NPP.
The resignation of Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and the subsequent leadership changes have highlighted the need for the party to prioritize unity and cohesion in order to present a strong front in the upcoming elections. Failure to address these internal issues could have serious implications for the NPP in 2024.
