Alhaji Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, has dismissed former President John Mahama’s promise to legalize the okada business as a commercial means of transport. Apexnewsgh reports
Speaking on Accra100.5 FM’s Ghana Yensom morning show monitored by Apexnewsgh, Mohammed raised several concerns about the proposal.
Mohammed cited research indicating that 60-70% of okada riders in Ghana are foreigners from neighboring countries like Benin, Mali, and Nigeria. He argued that legalizing their activities would primarily benefit these foreign nationals rather than address the employment needs of Ghanaians. “Mahama’s quest to legalize okada riding is essentially about providing jobs for foreigners,” Mohammed stated.
He highlighted the frequent accidents involving okada riders, many of whom do not speak any Ghanaian language, further underscoring their foreign origins. Mohammed urged Ghanaians to investigate the backgrounds of okada riders in their cities.
As the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Mohammed expressed concern over the safety and hazardous nature of okada riding, which endangers young men and should not be legalized.
Instead, he suggested that Mahama should focus on creating meaningful and alternative employment opportunities for the youth currently engaged in this risky occupation.
Mohammed’s stance emphasizes the need for sustainable and safe job opportunities for Ghanaians, rather than relying on a hazardous and potentially illegal activity like okada riding.
