NPP’s Defeat: Centralization of Power Under Akufo-Addo’s Leadership Blamed

In the wake of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections, a prominent party figure has come forward to shed light on the underlying issues that contributed to this significant defeat. Apexnewsgh reports

Eric Nartey Yeboah, serving as the Greater Accra Regional Second Vice Chairman, placed much of the blame squarely on the centralization of power under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his close-knit circle of advisors.

In a candid interview, Yeboah articulated his concerns regarding the way power was wielded during the preceding administration. He expressed that the former President and his team operated as if the party itself was a secondary entity, making major decisions from the Presidency without engaging the wider party leadership. This lack of consultation, he suggested, alienated the NPP from essential decision-making processes that, in a thriving democratic party, should be collaborative.

Yeboah cited specific instances that exemplified this disconnect, including the controversial appointment of Opoku Ahweneeeh Danquah to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). He noted that Danquah, rumored to be a relative of the former President’s Executive Secretary, did not demonstrate a lasting commitment to the party once they lost power; he reportedly returned to London shortly after the electoral defeat. This action, according to Yeboah, exemplified the troubling trend of appointees prioritizing personal interests over their loyalty to the party.

Reflecting on the electoral outcome, Yeboah conveyed a mix of disappointment and determination. He emphasized that for the NPP to reclaim its foothold, it must return to the core structures and principles that define the party. Many appointees from the former administration had strayed from these principles, he argued, leading to a disconnect between the party and its base.

As the NPP begins to regroup, Yeboah made a passionate plea for party supporters to distance themselves from individuals who may have acted against the party’s interests during their tenure. He urged that it is crucial to recognize these individuals acted in their personal capacities and not on behalf of the NPP. Only by prioritizing the party’s integrity and unity can they hope to rise again in the face of political challenges.
