Nana B’s criticism comes on the heels of Bagbin’s decision to suspend four Members of Parliament, including three from the NPP, for two weeks following a chaotic incident during the Appointments Committee sitting.
The incident, which resulted in the destruction of tables and microphones, prompted Bagbin to take action against the MPs. However, Nana B has described the Speaker’s actions as “unilateral” and “autocratic,” suggesting that Bagbin is abusing his power.
In a Facebook post, Nana B assured the Minority Caucus of the NPP’s continued support, encouraging them to remain resilient and unafraid of the NDC majority and the Speaker’s bullying tendencies. The Minority Caucus, in response, pledged to insist on following due procedure and consensus building in the House.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, also weighed in on the issue, describing the Speaker’s actions as “selective” and “autocratic.” Frimpong warned that the Speaker’s posture is dangerous, as it aims to cow the minority into submission and weaken their ability to hold the government accountable.
The NPP has reiterated its unflinching support for its MPs, calling on all Members of Parliament to stand united in the face of “repression and unfairness.” The party has pledged to address all forms of repression and unfairness in the application of parliamentary rules.
