The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) crushing defeat in the recent presidential and parliamentary elections has left many in shock, including former National Chairman Freddie Blay. Apexnewsgh report
In an interview on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk, Blay expressed his surprise at the outcome, attributing the NPP’s loss to unforeseen circumstances rather than poor governance or negligence by the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
Blay defended the Akufo-Addo administration’s record, citing its efforts in handling the economy, ensuring good governance, and establishing peace in the country despite severe challenges.
He acknowledged that the party was convinced of a favorable outcome, given its performance in office. “We were coming out of a difficult economic period with a low GDP. In spite of all these challenges, Akufo-Addo’s government, and therefore the NPP, was doing well for this country,” Blay stated.
However, the election results told a different story, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a landslide victory. The NPP’s defeat was marked by the loss of several key party figures, including Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi.
Blay’s comments have sparked debate, with some critics arguing that the Akufo-Addo administration’s handling of the economy was not as effective as claimed. In fact, Blay’s own assertion that the inflation rate had been reduced to 14% was disputed, with some sources indicating that the actual rate was significantly higher.
As the NPP reflects on its defeat, Blay’s comments highlight the party’s ongoing struggle to come to terms with its loss. While some may question Blay’s assessment of the Akufo-Addo administration’s performance, his remarks underscore the need for the NPP to engage in introspection and reassess its strategy in the wake of its electoral defeat.
