In recent developments in Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader and current Member of Parliament for Suame, has urged parliamentary leadership to engage in meaningful dialogue with Speaker Alban Bagbin. Apexnewsgh reports
This call for collaboration comes in light of growing tensions that have been disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
With the December 7 general elections approaching, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu underscored the necessity for effective communication and cooperation among the parliamentary leadership. He expressed concern that unresolved issues could jeopardize the electoral process, potentially undermining Ghana’s democratic integrity.
The situation escalated following Speaker Bagbin’s decision on October 17 to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, which led to an indefinite adjournment of Parliament. The deadlock has raised alarms, as it threatens to stall crucial legislative work, particularly the preparations for the upcoming elections.
A focal point in these discussions is the anticipated Constitutional Instrument (CI) from the Electoral Commission, which is essential for establishing the legal framework for the elections. Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu pointed out that this CI has yet to be submitted and warned that additional delays could disrupt the electoral timeline.
In a press interview on Monday, October 28, he stressed the urgency of resolving the standoff, stating, “Maybe we need to engage because elections should be held. And if elections must be held, every time that the presidential and general elections are going to be held, the Electoral Commission, for instance, will bring a CI to regulate the elections.”
His plea for open dialogue reflects a deeper concern for the functionality and unity of the House as Ghana stands on the brink of a critical electoral moment.
