Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced plans to reconvene Parliament in early November, following a petition by the Majority caucus to address pressing national matters after a prolonged adjournment. Apexnewsgh reports
The decision comes on the heels of an intense disagreement between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over which party holds the majority, sparked by Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant.
This move has intensified the rivalry between the two parties, with both sides seeking clarity to ensure the proper functioning of the legislative body. During a courtesy visit, Speaker Bagbin assured the Council of State that his office is working diligently to restore order and ensure a smooth legislative process.
He emphasized the urgency of reconvening Parliament, not only to resolve the ongoing dispute but also to address pressing national issues and implement procedural reforms to prevent similar conflicts in the future.
Speaker Bagbin reaffirmed his commitment to neutrality, vowing to uphold Ghana’s democratic values amidst the tense political landscape. “My role as Speaker is to maintain neutrality and safeguard Ghana’s democratic principles during these challenging times,” he stated.
The Council of State expressed confidence in Bagbin’s leadership, commending his efforts to bring stability and acknowledging the vital importance of restoring Parliament’s full legislative capacity.
A five-member delegation from the Council of State, led by Chairman Nana Otuo Siriboe, met with Speaker Bagbin to discuss the parliamentary impasse.
The Council offered support to Speaker Bagbin and the House leadership in addressing obstacles to reconvening Parliament. Speaker Bagbin will lead Ghana’s parliamentary delegation to the 67th CPA International Conference in Sydney, Australia, but plans to return earlier than scheduled due to the request for an early recall of the House.
