The Central North Regional Police Command has apprehended 42 individuals suspected of engaging in prostitution and drug-related activities in Ayamfuri, Central Region. Apexnewsgh reports
The arrested group consists of 32 Nigerian women believed to be involved in prostitution and 10 Ghanaian young men suspected of drug peddling.
According to DCOP Abraham Acqaye, the Central North Police Commander, the suspects were caught during operations at suspected hotspots and while engaging in illicit activities. The suspects, aged 20 to 32, were found with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, concoctions believed to be laced with Indian hemp, condoms, and cigarettes.
During initial questioning, some suspects claimed they were victims of human trafficking, lured by promises of legitimate employment but forced into prostitution upon arrival. Others disclosed they were compelled to work under exploitative conditions to repay debts owed to their traffickers, who demanded large sums of money before releasing them.
The police are currently conducting investigations to unravel the full extent of the operation. This crackdown highlights the ongoing challenges Ghana faces in combating human trafficking and organized crime.
Ghana has been working to strengthen its safety nets and protect vulnerable populations, with initiatives like the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project supporting over 350,000 households through the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty cash transfer program.
