The Greater Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has filed an injunction at an Accra High Court to prohibit the organizers of the ‘#DumsorMustStop’ demonstration from proceeding with the planned protest. Apexnewsgh reports

The action, filed on May 20, comes after the police had urged the organizers to relocate the protest venue and adjust the timing, but their request was declined.

The police are seeking a court order to stop the event entirely, citing concerns about the proposed protest route, particularly the planned endpoint at Revolution Square, which is close to Jubilee House, a designated security zone. The police also expressed concerns about the timing of the protest, which is scheduled to end around midnight.

Actress Yvonne Nelson, who is leading the protest, contends that the intermittent power cuts, locally known as ‘dumsor,’ are adversely affecting her business. She and her team had met with the police to notify them of the intended protest, but the police opposed the planned route after the meeting.

The injunction, filed on May 20, reads: “Take Notice that this Honourable Court shall be moved by Counsel for and on behalf of the Applicant herein praying this Honourable Court for an order prohibiting the respondents from holding an intended picketing fixed for 25th May 2024 at the Revolution Square, upon the grounds contained in the accompanying affidavit and for such further orders) as this Honourable Court may deem fit.”

The court’s decision on the injunction will determine whether the protest, scheduled for Saturday, May 25, will proceed as planned.
