President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has challenged Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioners in Ghana to strive towards making the country the regional hub for settling disputes via ADR. Apexnewsgh reports
He emphasized that Ghana has the potential to become the go-to destination for resolving multi-million dollar commercial disputes and cases involving the use of natural resources.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Governing Board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the establishment of the centre will provide a wholesome environment for resolving disputes. He noted that Ghana’s strong democratic credentials, liberal economy, and conducive business environment, coupled with its strong judicial system and pro-arbitration courts, make it an ideal location for ADR.
The President highlighted the benefits of ADR mechanisms such as mediation, arbitration, and negotiation, which provide parties with the opportunity to resolve disputes amicably, preserving relationships and fostering a culture of dialogue and understanding. He commended the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, and the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, for their efforts in establishing the centre.
The Governing Board of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Victor Jones Mawulom Dotse, includes representatives from various institutions, including the Ghana Bar Association, Ghana Chamber of Commerce, and the Judiciary. President Akufo-Addo urged the board to work towards making Ghana a safe haven for dispute resolution, just as it is for investment.
He emphasized that Ghana’s strong credentials and the establishment of the ADR centre will propel the country to become an arbitration hub in Africa, particularly in West Africa. The President’s vision is to make Ghana the preferred destination for resolving disputes, and he is confident that ADR practitioners will rise to the challenge.
