President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the Cabinet to soon deliberate on decentralizing the national sanitation budget, aiming to empower districts to take full responsibility for their sanitation management.
This initiative is part of his broader strategy to enhance local accountability in the country’s sanitation efforts.
During a durbar at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa, Greater Accra, on Friday, May 16, as part of his ongoing ‘Thank You Tour,’ President Mahama emphasized that once the proposed budget is approved, each district will be accountable for handling its sanitation issues. He stated, “Cabinet will soon meet on a decentralisation of the sanitation budget and make every district responsible for its own sanitation.”
In addition to this significant budgetary reform, President Mahama unveiled plans to revive the National Sanitation Day program. This initiative will be supported by legal backing and sufficient funding, aimed at fostering collaboration between local assemblies and private sector stakeholders. He stated, “Cleanliness will become one of the key performance indicators for measuring the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and will determine whether they will remain in office or be removed.”
The revived National Sanitation Day will transform into a legally mandated monthly exercise engaging all Ghanaians. “This time it will not be a symbolic event; it will be properly funded, operationalized through partnerships with local assemblies and private sector providers,” he affirmed.
President Mahama’s announcements aim to instill a culture of cleanliness and public accountability, ensuring that sanitation remains a top priority for local leaders and communities across the nation.
