President John Dramani Mahama has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the dollar gift saga involving Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
During a recent event, Mahama sought to clarify a similar gesture he made during his Thank You Tour, emphasizing the differences in their contexts.
While visiting the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, Mahama handed money to a dancer who performed at the event. In response to the unfolding situation, he took the opportunity to clarify, “To put on record that the money I have was GH₵500 not dollars.” His remarks aimed to distinguish his action from the recent scrutiny faced by Gyamfi.
The controversy arose after Gyamfi received criticism for gifting U.S. dollars to priestess-turned-evangelist Patricia Asiama, an act many viewed as inappropriate and reflective of broader concerns regarding propriety in public office. Following the backlash, Gyamfi publicly apologized for his actions.
In light of the situation, Mahama accepted Gyamfi’s apology but also offered a cautionary note. He urged Gyamfi to exercise better judgment and restraint in the future, reinforcing the importance of accountability in public service.
The President’s remarks highlight his commitment to maintaining integrity and transparency within his administration.
