Speaking at the launch of the National Economic Dialogue on Monday, March 3, under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together,” President Mahama emphasized the need for collective thinking to transform Ghana’s economy.
The President noted that policies aimed at revitalizing the economy will require buy-in from multiple stakeholders. “My fellow citizens, I have the political will to see through such reforms, but these reforms must be the product of our collective thinking and sensitization of well-considered proposals from stakeholders in the Ghanaian economy,” he stated.
President Mahama expressed his desire to be remembered as the President who provided a platform for Ghanaians to contribute to the nation’s development. He added, “A new era is upon us, an era of bold transformation, economic expansion, and limitless opportunities.”
Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, also spoke at the event, highlighting the impact of poor governance and corruption on Ghana’s youth. He lamented the rise of “Generation Hustlers” – young people who have lost hope in Ghana’s leadership and are eager to leave the country.
Dr. Yamson acknowledged that external shocks have contributed to Ghana’s economic difficulties but emphasized that the country’s problems are primarily homegrown. “The overwhelming majority of our problems are homegrown,” he stated.
The National Economic Dialogue brings together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss policies that will drive Ghana’s economic recovery. The event is expected to foster a sense of collective ownership and responsibility for Ghana’s economic development.
